Jarl Wahlström

JARL WAHLSTRÖM, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in Clinical Psychology from the Department of Psychology, University of Jyväskylä, Finland and former Director of the Jyväskylä University Psychotherapy Training and Research Center.

He graduated as a psychologist (M.A.) in 1975 from the University of Helsinki and received his doctorate at Jyväskylä in 1993. He has an advanced training in family and systems therapy and supplementary training in psychodynamic and cognitive psychotherapy.

He worked as a clinical psychologist from 1976 to 1985 and from that year onwards as a full-time university teacher at the University of Jyväskylä where he was appointed as full professor in 1997.

He has been teaching in several training programs in family therapy and was during the years 1997 to 2015 heading a national integrative postgraduate specialization programme in psychotherapy for psychologists in Finland. He has acted as visiting professor to several universities in Europe and the USA, notably the University of Salamanca, Spain, and to the European Institute of Integrative Psychotherapy in Athens, Greece.

His main research interest is in discursive and narrative processes in psychotherapeutic encounters and their relation to the (re)constitution of agency positions and sense of agency as outcome of psychotherapy. On these and related topics he has published in several international journals and books. He is the supervisor of several doctoral dissertations.
